It is now well established that we at House.mt love throwing judgments at design and architecture in Malta; but for this article, we’d like our readers (that’s you) to sit on the chair and pass the verdicts.

Ryan Calleja is a local architecture student who created a survey in order to find what Maltese people find beautiful, and what they don’t, when it comes to buildings, properties and places in Malta.

This survey is part of Ryan’s dissertation, who’s currently reading at the University of Malta to master in Architecture. We have decided to give Ryan a hand and let you know about the survey.

The survey will ask you to rate buildings according to your preference.

Assign ‘1’ to the building you like most, and ‘6’ to the one you like the least.

It a total of 12 questions, and we completed it in around 4 minutes.

Here’s a little bit more about the research:

• This research attempts to understand the relevance of the phrase ‘Beauty is in the eye of the beholder’ in contemporary architectural practice. Usually, this phrase prevents any furthering of the conversation on the subject of beauty or its lack thereof in our local architectural context. Is beauty truly just in the eye of the beholder, or are there patterns and practices that make or break design?

• The study (with its data being gathered through the questionnaire) attempts to understand whether beauty is truly subjective in its nature, or else whether a clearly-defined intersubjective pattern exists when discussing the extreme ends of the spectrum ie: The most beautiful and the least beautiful

• This data is being compared with that of the architects (professionals) working within the profession, in order to compare the perception of beauty of both main samples and arrive at a conclusion on the matter.
