18 Quaint Mellieħa Areas to make you fall in Love

[house_meta_top/]

To kick off our Changing Streetscapes campaign, we published an article covering all of the current developments taking place in Mellieħa, specifically those in the main streets (Triq il Kbira and Triq Gorg Borg Olivier). If you read that article, you’ll have noticed that our approach was unbiased but admittedly could do with some more positivity. We’re strong believers of silver linings, so this time around, we ventured into the nooks and crannies of Mellieħa to bring to light some of the quaint sights around the town worth taking a walk for.

So, what beautiful things are to be found in Mellieha, you ask?

.

First and foremost, this friendly neighbourhood feline.

.

This random, undeveloped plot of rock and cacti that lies between two houses.

.

The skylight in the secluded underground shrine of Our Lady of the Grotto (Il-Madonna tal-Ghar), away from the hustle and bustle of the main street.

.

Mellieha’s own Flatiron Building

Previously a Chinese restaurant, now abandoned – with a lovely pink hue that’s gradually fading. We should let Wes Anderson know about this place.

.
This recently refurbished house that reminds us of the wonders of maintaining aesthetics.

.
The murals

Consisting of a boy petting a cat, reinterpreting the painting of Vincent Van Gogh’s bedroom, and a copy of the fresco of Our Lady of Mellieha, supposedly painted by St Luke in 60AD, the original of which can be found right next door in that very same chapel.

.

This courtyard of an abandoned house covered in graffiti and reclaimed by orange bell flowers.

.

.

The original Giuseppi’s Bar & Bistro – now located in Salina – with its distinct crimson paint. The inside was also painted in the same colour.

.

These charming hand-painted ceramic street signs.

.
This house that takes you to a safari.

.

This old phone booth where people can donate and/or borrow books.

.

These charming façades.

.

The famous bougainvillea tree that leans over this side-street, which recently caused some controversy.

.
These abandoned buildings calling out for some tender loving care.

.

This house that lies atop the Mellieha bakery

Where you’ll find the bakers already at work in the early hours of the morning.

.

This house that may have been a windmill at one point

Or it may have been connected to one, considering it bears the street name Il-Mithna l-Gdida (The New Windmill).

.
These houses hidden in the side-streets that have gorgeous climbing plants in common.

.

An example of the steep Mellieha hills, flanked with lanterns.

We hope you enjoyed this article as much as we enjoyed hunting around for attractions! If there are any other quaint spots in Mellieha that you know about that didn’t appear in this list, let us know about them in the comments (or send us a private message if feeling shy!
