Sights for sore eyes: 6 Buildings in Malta that You will Want to Own

[house_meta_top/]

.Beautifully designed buildings are always a welcomed reprieve when we’re trudging through slow, endless traffic, or making our way to the bus stop. It’s true, we’ve seen Malta lose a number of architectural gems and iconic buildings to a construction frenzy that’s not going away anytime soon. But a small group on Facebook , aptly called ‘Malta architectural pornography’ have been putting up photos of attractive buildings – from houses to churches to palazzos – in Malta that remind us of what our island still has a lot to offer.

That’s partially thanks to a long line of people fighting to raise awareness about the need to protect, preserve, and restore our cultural heritage. Thanks to them, and architects who’ve had the opportunity to express their creativity in the past, it is still a pleasantly common occurrence that we spot a house or building that delight our eyes.

For this article, we picked 6 photos that exhibit some of Malta’s best (architectural) models.

1. First up, this modernist star in Attard

Selected ingredients: The wild red paint and the colourful mural by its door

2. It’s a surprise, but sometimes, a business is just what an older building needs to still stand strong

No, it didn’t bite the dust. It was getting renovated!

3. On the right, carefully restored and extended by Lombardi Bank; on the left, an unapologetically more contemporary building.

A bad clash, or a perfect pairing?

..

4. Just another example of how underrated the architectural gems found in Paola can be!

5. A building which reminds us that modernism in Malta is just as iconic and integral to our heritage as the traditional old houses with the wooden balconies.

Modernist buildings often tend to get overlooked and demolished with little opposition – keep an eye out!

.

6. In the words of Edward Said, “1980s Maltese vernacular architecture is characterised by a revival of arches and their variants in local limestone”.

..

Any buildings in Malta that you think deserve to be on a list like this?
