Calling Design & DIY Lovers: Up your woodwork skills with the Valletta Design Cluster

The Valletta Design Cluster is organising a visit to one of Malta’s most prolific timber importers for a session on woodwork and joinery. The session, which will be co-moderated by the Valletta Design Cluster team and Mr Alex Mercieca, the Managing Director of the hosting organisation, will discuss and delve into the various types of wood one can use, their strengths and weaknesses, applications, and more.

The event welcomes everyone interested, from designers, makers, artists, architects,  to homeowners – especially if interested in DIY (do it yourself project, for an example, check out this article).

There’s a reason we think all homeowners should strive to learn about the ways wood can be used. You may ask: Woodn’t I just buy the furniture finished?

It’s true, we’re lucky to live in a time when available to us is a vast number of services and products aimed at making our lives easier, including furniture, but if budgeting, good value, and quality is important to you, then having a good understanding of woodwork helps you separate the wheat from the chaff when you’re buying new furniture, visiting garage sales, maintaining furniture you already own, or giving them a touch up.

The discussion, which will take place at the PM Hobby DIY Center in Mrieħel, will be followed by a guided tour of the timber store. The first session will take place this Thursday, 21st February; the second session will take place on Saturday, 23rd February. Both sessions will start at 10am and run up till noon.

This event is free but registration by email on info@vallettadesigncluster.org is requested due to technical reasons. When registering, it is recommended that you provide the following information:

1. Name/s, surname/s and occupation of participant/s registering for the event;
2. Date of session you intend to attend (21st or 23rd – activities will be the same on both sessions);
3. One brief phrase that describes your interest in woodwork.

These events are part of the Hatchery Initiative, which aims to trigger creativity and innovation by connecting people from different backgrounds. Part of the Valletta 2018 Foundation, the Valletta Design Cluster is organising these activities to facilitate connections among the eventual users of its premises, which will be situated in the Old Abattoir site in Valletta, and to better understand the users’ needs to try to address them through the services and facilities offer. The Valletta Design Cluster is also working with other EU countries on the Design4Innovation project, a collaboration which seeks to find ways to improve design support mechanisms for small and medium enterprises.
